Effective Instruction in the Library:
A Workshop for Librarians Grounded in the
"Characteristics of Effective Instruction"
Presenters: Dr. Jean Donham, Assoc. Professor of Library Studies, UNI; Mary Cameron, School Library Program consultant, Iowa Dept. of Education

Teaching in the library differs from classroom teaching in that Teacher Librarians are teaching different classes throughout the day, week and year rather than a “class of their own.”  Their teaching responsibilities call for application of effective teaching practices as well as collaboration with classroom colleagues. This workshop will focus attention on that teaching role, with special emphasis on inquiry-based learning and deep learning.

Goals:
Explore students’ (and teachers’) mental models of library research assignments
Define deep learning in the context of library research
Design models of integration of information literacy, P21 and Iowa Core curricula
Design lessons for explicit instruction in the library

This workshop will be offered across the state at various locations and dates from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plan to attend the one that works for you. For more details, contact the Media Specialist at the respective AEA. (Note: 1 relicensure credit is an option if you attend the entire workshop plus the Spring IASL Conference, April 11-12.)
